Here comes the most-awaited (I think.) Hypertension is one of the major health problems of this age; it is caused by several factors like diet and lifestyle, genetics and age to name a few. Let me not overemphasize this topic by going directly to the regimen I learned first-hand from my dad.

5. Hypertension

Taheebo and King of Bitters--sound familiar to you? These are my dad's secret in combating hypertension. For the record, he was rushed in the ICU for three times due to heart attack. The worst one leading to congestive heart disease. Doctors even told us he needs to undergo angioplasty but his health even with that will regess, they said.

With years of very expensive maintenance medications, dad taught of using herbal medicines to aid his condition. and yes, at sixty plus now, I can say he even became healthier and stronger--thanks to those herbs    he personally cultured.

Taheebo, locally called as balbas-pusa and King of Bitters or serpentina proved to be very effective body cleansers. Not only were the clogs in the blood vessels gone, causing his hypertension, all of his internal organs are in perfect shape after his general check-up, even his doctor was amazed!

So, how does dad does the regimen? So simple, he just hand picks fresh leaves of serpentina and taheebo, seven of each for a cup of freshly boiled water, again covered and set aside for a few minutes, which he drinks thrice daily.

I can't blame my dad's obsession with herbal plants, I myself is one of his 'followers', having my own vacant spaces planted with these herbs, because they are undeniably and superbly effective (minus the expenses).:)

I hope these blog series helped you, for anything I can help you with, please do not hesitate to leave your comment/s. Thank you!

Been waiting for the tips on dealing with kidney stones and high blood pressure? Here they are:

4. Kidney stones

While different expensive medicines are vastly available in the market, we can always opt for the inexpensive and natural ones. Banaba (Lagerstroemia speciosa) is a proven remedy for kidney stones by effectively flushing out these stones during urination. I can always remember how my uncle was about to undergo a surgical operation to remove his massive kidney stone but because he heed the advice of his friend, the said operation was avoided by his regular intake of home-made banaba tea.

Banaba tablets or capsules are now out in the market, giving the same benefit as preparing a banaba tea at home. If you opt to prepare the tea, having a source of banaba leaves in the backyard, follow these procedures:

1. Collect mature banaba leaves and air dry for 24 hours to lose moisture content. Important: Do not expose to direct sunlight, this affects the efficacy of the tea.

2.For the actual tea preparation, add 10-15 air dried leaves to a liter of freshly boiled water and cover for about five minutes. After such, you can get a portion, like one cup and drink three times daily. Dad does this upon waking up, about an hour after lunch or during snack time in the morning and right before going to sleep. Remember, a cup (or more, dad even drinks about 500ml) for each time interval. Important: Do not boil the leaves, just like in any other case, plant enzymes and other proteins are denatured or damaged by high temperatures thus affecting their activity.

Just an additional info, one can always prepare for a week's tea requirement, just keep the tea in the fridge. You can always drink it cold also. I recommend banaba because unlike other medicinal plants, banaba is not bitter, it almost tastes like plain water, you try. Yet, it is very very effective.

Here are some very basic things we can do with our household-available resources when we talk about commonly experienced aches and pains or illnesses:

1. Toothache (due to a cavity).

Out of toothache drops? Need not worry, this simple trick does the same effect.

After a gargle of lukewarm water with an amount of table salt, get small pieces of a freshly chopped garlic and carefully put them inside the tooth cavity. The warm salt solution will work as a mouthwash and will help soothe the aching gums while the garlic will work as a natural antiseptic due to its antibacterial properties. For added pain relief, apply your favorite menthol ointment by a light massage just outside the aching region.

Works all the time, adults and children alike.

2. Rashes

Whether its due to the summer heat or diaper allergies, rashes are very uncomfortable and hard to deal with, specially with the little ones.

One common practice done in easing irritating rashes is applying petroleum jelly. But there is a better alternative--cornstrach. Cornstarch, unlike petroleum jelly (which is technically a wax) which feels warm, cools the skin while leaving it dry and non-greasy.

More to it, applying cornstarch every during diaper change instead of a baby powder is guaranteed to keep babies free from diaper rash. How economical, it's even cheaper than both the petroleum jelly and baby powder! That's why I definitely recommend these to all moms out there.

3. Cuts, Bruises, Wounds

Loyal to iodine solution for cleaning wounds and bruises? Here's another great alternative, commonly for free. Locally known as malunggay, Moringa is a very powerful antiseptic that can be applied topically, just like any commercial antiseptic, but with less stinging sensation.

What to do? Just pick some young Moringa leaves, crush with clean hands until enough extracts come out and apply directly to the affected area previously washed with mild soap and water.
